The American company Perplexity has begun developing the first smartphone with integrated artificial intelligence. This project is being implemented in collaboration with the largest European telecom operator, Deutsche Telekom, reports TechCrunch. The new device is expected to hit the market in the second half of 2025, with sales starting in 2026.
According to preliminary information, the AI smartphone will be able to perform a wide range of tasks: booking flights and hotels, sending messages and emails, making calls, and setting reminders. The device owner will only need to voice their request.
The founder and CEO of Sistemma, Sergey Zubarev, believes that if the gadget can operate autonomously, it may become not just an assistant but a full-fledged conversational partner for users. However, Zubarev notes that previous attempts to create similar devices did not receive proper development. He recalls a company that released a wearable device in the form of a brooch capable of responding to voice commands. In his opinion, AI in smartphones has existed for a long time—for example, Samsung technologies help users enhance images.
From a convenience perspective, the new phone could serve as a tool for performing everyday tasks such as setting an alarm or dialing a number using voice commands. However, it is too early to say whether the device can be trusted with more serious functions, such as banking transactions. The gadget will likely offer an innovative approach to user interaction, allowing for more natural conversations and command execution. Essentially, it will be a more advanced version of a chatbot integrated into daily life.
According to Deutsche Telekom, the device will incorporate Google Cloud services, text-to-speech tools from ElevenLabs, and AI-powered image and video editing tools from Picsart. Notably, the concept of such a smartphone was introduced by Deutsche Telekom last year, and initially, it will be primarily targeted at the European market.
However, not all experts see this project as a technological breakthrough. The Director of Innovation and Business Development at MTS Web Services, Danila Egorov, believes that the AI smartphone is more of a trend than a true revolution. According to him, the device is essentially a regular Android smartphone with a pre-installed AI Assistant from Perplexity. The expected price range for the new product is around $1,000, comparable to premium models on the market. The only real difference will be deeply integrated AI, ensuring seamless and native interaction between the user and the assistant.
At the end of February, Perplexity also introduced its AI browser, Comet, which, according to the company, aims to redefine web browsing in the same way that Perplexity AI has reimagined search. This move clearly indicates that the company is betting on artificial intelligence to secure its position in this promising market segment.
