Google prepares for its biggest developer conference — Google I/O 2025

Google is set to hold its flagship annual developer conference — Google I/O 2025 — on May 20 and 21. CEO Sundar Pichai, DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, and heads of Search, Cloud, and Android will present major product updates. Google I/O 2025 is expected to place a strong emphasis on artificial intelligence (AI) — and it’s going to be serious.

Focus on AI: Gemini and DeepMind projects

The Gemini family of AI models is expected to take center stage at Google I/O 2025, as Pichai and Hassabis continue competing for dominance against rivals like OpenAI, xAI, Anthropic, and other well-funded companies. Updates are also anticipated on DeepMind projects, including the multimodal AI system Project Astra. At last year’s Google I/O, the company teased a pair of smart glasses based on Project Astra.

One of the core themes at Google I/O 2025 will be how AI is being integrated across all Google products. For example, Elizabeth Reid, Head of Search, will speak on the AI stage about how generative AI is “revolutionizing search.” Additional talks will explore how scientists use AI, how AI agents will interact with user apps, and how autonomous vehicles like Waymo use AI for real-world navigation.

Key events at Google I/O 2025

The main keynote at Google I/O 2025 will begin at 10:00 AM PT on May 20 at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View. You’ll be able to stream the keynote live online. At 1:30 PM PT, a developer keynote will take place, with a more technical focus than the consumer-oriented updates.

Later that day, at 3:30 PM PT, Demis Hassabis will join Alex Kantrowitz, host of the Big Technology podcast, to discuss the future of DeepMind’s AI and its global impact. Simultaneous talks will cover new updates for Android, Chrome, and Google Cloud.

Android Show: Streaming Android updates

Some sessions at Google I/O won’t be livestreamed, but TechCrunch will be on site to report on the biggest announcements. This year, Android announcements will arrive a week before Google I/O 2025 during a separate event called “The Android Show.” It begins at 10:00 AM PT on Tuesday, and the stream will be available online.
